The small Somerset village of Westonzoyland, on the Somerset Levels, lies some 6 kilometres from Bridgwater.  Much of the area surrounding the village was common land owned by the local Abbey at Glastonbury. In the middle of the 19th century the village staged its own races which were billed as the ‘Westzoyland and Somerset Races’ and were first held on Friday 11th September 1857.  The meeting opened with Weston-Zoyland Stakes over 1 ½ miles when Mr Evan’s Blue Bell beat Lunelle and Phantom. The New York Plate was sponsored by friends of Westzoyland residing in New York and was won by Sweetbriar. The venture was well supported and a second meeting was held the next year. The final meeting took place on Friday 2nd September 1859, concluding with the New York Plate run over 1 ¾ miles which went to The Poet for Mr E Brayley.
